Language Paper 2 — Q2 (summary)

AQA English · Exam

What you need to know

  • Q2 is a summary of differences or similarities.
  • You must use both sources (and usually a specified section of each).
  • Simple method (safe + high scoring):
    1. Re-read the question and underline the focus (e.g. attitudes, experiences, feelings).
    2. Draw a 2-column table: Source A / Source B.
    3. Find 3 clear points (each point must be supported by text evidence).
    4. Write 3 comparative sentences/mini-paragraphs: Both… / However A… whereas B…

Common mistakes

  • Writing about only one source.
  • Copying huge quotes instead of summarising.
  • Making inferences that aren’t supported by the text.
  • Listing points without comparing.

Self-check

  • I used both sources in every point.
  • Each point is a summary, not analysis of language.
  • I used comparative connectives: both, similarly, whereas, however.
  • My points directly answer the question focus.
