Embedding and analysing quotations (AO1 + AO2)
AQA English · Skills
Key steps (method)
- Pick a short quote (or 2–6 words) that directly supports your point.
- Embed it into your sentence (avoid “This shows…” as your only structure).
- Zoom in on 1–2 key words: connotations, tone, semantic field.
- Name a method only if you can explain effect (metaphor, contrast, symbolism, stage directions, etc.).
- Link back to the question and your argument.
Common mistakes
- Dropping a quote in with no explanation (AO1 only).
- Using a long quote and then analysing none of it.
- Calling everything “a metaphor” / “imagery” without being precise.
- Writing “This makes the reader want to read on” (generic, usually weak).
