Embedding and analysing quotations (AO1 + AO2)

AQA English · Skills

Key steps (method)

  • Pick a short quote (or 2–6 words) that directly supports your point.
  • Embed it into your sentence (avoid “This shows…” as your only structure).
  • Zoom in on 1–2 key words: connotations, tone, semantic field.
  • Name a method only if you can explain effect (metaphor, contrast, symbolism, stage directions, etc.).
  • Link back to the question and your argument.

Common mistakes

  • Dropping a quote in with no explanation (AO1 only).
  • Using a long quote and then analysing none of it.
  • Calling everything “a metaphor” / “imagery” without being precise.
  • Writing “This makes the reader want to read on” (generic, usually weak).
