Evaluation with nuance (how to argue “to what extent”)
AQA English · Skills
Key steps (method)
- Turn the statement into a judgement scale: mostly / partly / only in some moments.
- Build 3 points:
- 2 that support your judgement
- 1 that complicates it (a controlled counterpoint)
- For each point: quote → AO2 zoom → explain how it supports/limits the statement.
- Use evaluative connectives: however, nevertheless, on the other hand, ultimately.
- End by confirming the extent (don’t sit on the fence).
Common mistakes
- Saying “I agree” with no evidence.
- Being 50/50 vague (“it could be this or that”) instead of choosing an extent.
- Adding a counterpoint that derails your argument.
