Evaluation with nuance (how to argue “to what extent”)

AQA English · Skills

Key steps (method)

  • Turn the statement into a judgement scale: mostly / partly / only in some moments.
  • Build 3 points:
    • 2 that support your judgement
    • 1 that complicates it (a controlled counterpoint)
  • For each point: quote → AO2 zoom → explain how it supports/limits the statement.
  • Use evaluative connectives: however, nevertheless, on the other hand, ultimately.
  • End by confirming the extent (don’t sit on the fence).

Common mistakes

  • Saying “I agree” with no evidence.
  • Being 50/50 vague (“it could be this or that”) instead of choosing an extent.
  • Adding a counterpoint that derails your argument.
