Alternative interpretations (how to do it without forcing it)

AQA English · Skills

Key steps (method)

  • Pick a quote with ambiguity (or at least two plausible readings).
  • Write your main interpretation first (clear + supported by language).
  • Add a second interpretation using: Alternatively / Another reading is…
  • Anchor it in the same words (don’t invent a new idea).
  • Decide which reading best fits the writer’s overall message.

Common mistakes

  • Adding a second interpretation that isn’t supported by the quote.
  • Writing “some people think…” with no explanation.
  • Using alternative interpretations everywhere (one good one beats three forced ones).
